A note from Murmuration
Over the past month, we have spent time with a number of credit unions, hearing how their teams work today, what is changing and where technology can make life simpler for staff and members.
We also attended the All Together Money Conference and travelled to Belfast for another opportunity to meet people from across the sector. The most useful part of events like these is often the conversation around them: the practical challenges, the awkward processes and the ideas people want to make possible.
Every credit union is different, but several themes have come through consistently. Teams want technology that joins things up. They want less duplication and fewer manual workarounds. They want a better digital experience for members without losing the human service that makes credit unions distinctive.
That is exactly why these conversations matter to us. Murmuration is being built specifically for UK credit unions. The more we understand about how your credit union operates, the better we can design a platform around the realities of running one.
What weโre hearing
Running several disconnected systems creates extra work. Credit unions are looking for a clearer view of members and operations, with information flowing between functions rather than being repeatedly re-entered.
Members increasingly expect convenient digital services. Credit unions also want to protect the personal support and community connection that set them apart.
Bringing in new members is only one part of growth. Onboarding, servicing, lending, reporting and compliance all need to be able to support that growth too.
These are themes we will keep exploring in future editions. If there is a challenge you think the sector should be talking about, we would like to hear it.
Events
September gave us two valuable opportunities to spend time with the credit union community: the All Together Money Conference and a further sector event in Belfast.
Events are useful for more than what happens on stage. Some of the most revealing conversations happen between sessions, over coffee or when somebody starts with:
โHere is the thing that really frustrates usโฆโWhere the most useful conversations begin
Thank you to everyone who took the time to talk to us. Those conversations are helping us understand the priorities, pressures and opportunities facing credit unions as we continue to develop Murmuration.
Out and about
What do we mean by one connected system?
Murmuration brings the technology, banking services and support needed to run a credit union into one connected platform. The proposition spans the member journey and the operational work behind it, including onboarding, core banking, lending, CRM, reporting and ledgers, treasury, and compliance and regulatory processes.
The aim is simple: information should move with the member and be available to the people who need it. Fewer hand-offs. Less duplication. A clearer view of what is happening across your credit union.
Over the coming months, we will use this section to take a closer look at individual areas of the platform and the problems they are designed to solve.
Meet the team
A bit of everything, which is one of the joys of starting a new company. On any given day I might be making the tea, talking to credit unions about what frustrates them, working through banking arrangements or helping design a fairly complex system. Iโve run my own business for 25 years, but Murmuration is a new challenge. My job is to keep listening, bring the right people together and make sure what we build genuinely makes life better for credit unions and their members.
Weโre designing both the plumbing and the shop window of Murmuration. Behind the scenes, that means one connected system for membership, savings, lending, payments and reporting. What members will see is just as important: current accounts, a choice of virtual or physical debit card, childrenโs savings and small business accounts.
The interesting, occasionally head-scratching part is making it all work together. A member should be able to use their credit union every day, while staff can see what they need in one place instead of juggling several ageing systems.
Today the focus is on forecasts and cards, which makes for an intellectually stimulating day.
The first thing is how much the people running them care. Many are helping members who need fair financial support most. But credit unions serve very different memberships: the needs of a workplace credit union, for example, may be quite different from those of a community credit union. We canโt assume one approach will fit everyone.
โWhat I hear consistently is that they want to do more and help more people.โ
Too often, their systems make that harder than it should be. Thatโs shaping Murmuration: it needs to give each credit union room to serve its own members, while making the everyday work easier for the people behind it.
I spend as much time as I can with my wife Louise, who is also the marketing director, and with our eight-year-old daughter. I support Liverpool Football Club, enjoy amateur motorsport and have developed a taste for hiking. Iโve recently climbed Snowdon, and Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike are next on the list, hopefully before the weather turns.

One thing weโre thinking about
Digital transformation can easily become a technology shopping list. A new onboarding tool. A separate CRM. Another reporting system. A different lending platform. Each might solve an individual problem, but the organisation can still be left joining everything together.
For a credit union, the question is not simply whether each system works. It is whether the whole operating model works together. Can a member move from joining to saving, borrowing and everyday banking without information being lost between systems? Can a member of staff see the context they need without moving between multiple screens? Can management understand what is happening across the credit union without assembling the picture manually?
That is the thinking behind Murmuration. One connected system does not mean every credit union has to operate in exactly the same way. It means the technology underneath the organisation is designed to connect the member journey, the staff experience and the information needed to run the credit union.
The technology should make the credit union easier to run. It should not ask the credit union to organise itself around the technology.
Next month
Next month, weโll look at how credit unions can build a stronger primary relationship with members, supporting more of their everyday financial needs in one place and creating more reasons to engage regularly.
Weโll explore what that could mean for the member experience, from everyday banking and payments to saving, borrowing and financial wellbeing.
If we havenโt spoken yet, we would like to hear how your credit union works today: whatโs working, whatโs getting in the way and what you would change if you could.
